Asbestos-Based Pottery from Corsica: The First Fiber-Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composite
Asbestos-containing pottery shards collected in the northeast of Corsica (Cap Corse) and dating from the 19th century, or earlier, have been analyzed by SEM-EDS, XRPD, FTIR and Raman microspectroscopy. Blue (crocidolite) and white (chrysotile) asbestos fiber bundles are observed in cross-sections. Most of the asbestos is partly or totally dehydroxylated, and some transformation to forsterite is observed to occur, indicative of a firing above 800 C. Examination of freshly fractured pieces shows a nonbrittle fracture with fiber pull-out, consistent with ...... microscopy, a noninvasive and mobile technique, in identifying, residues testifying to nondomestic, chemical and metallurgical uses in the case of these ceramics. A sorting, of useful shards for additional analyses can therefore be done on site, in museum reserves or on excavation sites. Author ...

Pleistocene rhinoceros from Bogovina Cave: the first report of Stephanorhinus hundsheimensis Toula, 1902 (Mammalia, Rhinocerotidae) from Serbia
Finds of Pleistocene rhinoceros are rare in Serbia, and only one species (the woolly rhinoceros Coelodonta antiquitatis Blumenbach, 1799) has been reported so far. The current paper presents the dental material of an extinct so-called Hundsheim rhinoceros, Stephanorhinus hundsheimensis Toula, 1902 from Bogovina Cave (East ern Serbia). Both the morphological and metric characteristics of the teeth are consis tent with the attribution to S. hundsheimensis. Unfortunately, the rhinoceros material originated from an uncertain geological context, so there is no ...... Pleistocene site of Hundsheim in Lower Austria (Toula, 1902), while in neighbouring Slova- kia, S. cf. hundsheimensis is recorded at the early Middle Pleistocene of Levický Vápnik (Zervanová, 2014). Hydrochemistry of groundwater contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons: the impact of biodegradation (Vitanovac, Serbia)
Nenad Marić, Jana Štrbački, Sanja Mrazovac Kurilić, Vladimir P. Beškoski, Zoran Nikić, Snežana Ignjatović, Jovana Malbašić (2020)Aquifer contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons leads to measurable changes of groundwater hydrochemistry, primarily due to the microbiological activity. This study analyzes this phenomenon at an historical kerosene-contaminated site in Vitanovac (central Serbia). Due to the long-term hydrocarbon contamination and exposure to aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation mechanisms, the lowest concentrations of O2, NO3−, and SO42− (electron acceptors) and the highest concentrations of Mn and Fe (products of microbial metabolic activity) overlap. The terminal redox-accepting processes in groundwater ranged from oxygen ...Nenad Marić, Jana Štrbački, Sanja Mrazovac Kurilić, Vladimir P. Beškoski, Zoran Nikić, Snežana Ignjatović, Jovana Malbašić. Industrial Waste Heat Potential for Meeting Heat Demand in the Republic of Serbia
